The nonsurgical rhinoplasty is a relatively recent development in facial plastic surgery. Although dermal fillers to provide contouring and volume have existed for many years, starting with bovine collagen, improved, longer lasting fillers have only become available for cosmetic use in recent years.

As this is a nonsurgical procedure, no incisions of any kind are made in the nose. Instead, cosmetic fillers are injected in the office to sculpt the nose to correct underdeveloped nasal bridges, unsightly bumps, or irregularities present on the nose. Gentle massage then achieves the final shape. The procedure often takes less than 15 minutes, and a numbing ointment or cream can be used beforehand to minimize discomfort.

Mild swelling and bruising are expected after the procedure, though use of ice packs can reduce these effects. Make-up can be applied immediately after the procedure, and patients can return to work without incident later that day. However, those who wear glasses should generally plan on about 24 hours without them to prevent any changes in the shape of their new noses.

Radiesse, which is comprised of calcium hydroxyapatite, a material also present in bone and cartilage tissue, is one material ideal for reshaping the nose. Unsightly bumps, depressions, and irregularities can be altered with the use of this multi-functional filler. Other fillers commonly used for the nose include Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm.

Minor adjustments, maintenance, or further enhancements can often be done with additional sessions of the procedure. In some cases, nonsurgical touch-ups of surgical rhinoplasties can also be done with these fillers. As always, dermal fillers such as Radiesse and Juvederm are temporary, and generally last up to a year or so in the nose.

This can also be an advantage for those desiring nasal reshaping, as the nonsurgical rhinoplasty can be a "trial" period prior to the permanent results of surgical rhinoplasty. You can always see if you like the changes of not only your nose, but the face as a whole, before committing to surgery.

Ask your facial plastic surgeon about the nonsurgical rhinoplasty and whether it is appropriate for you. As it is achieved by adding volume, not all noses are amenable to the nonsurgical rhinoplasty. But for many people, the nonsurgical rhinoplasty is a simple, effective option that may only be an office visit away.
